This morning, I went with two of my friends to visit the Mercato delle Stampe, an open air market about a 10 minute walk from our apartment. The market sells old books, prints, magazines, and a few other odds and ends. It was a very neat market, but I did not feel knowledgeable enough about prices to buy anything just yet.
This afternoon, we had our first studio class. Our studio project site is situated just outside of the Termini Train Station. Our task is to design a mixed-use building on the edge of the Piazza in front of the station, and to unify the currently fragmented and somewhat unpleasant piazza. Because it was raining, we did not get much of a chance to observe the site, but I plan on returning tomorrow to sketch and to take photographs. It will be interesting to see how our professor, who is Italian and actually runs his own private architectural practice in Rome, will analyze our projects differently from my professors in the US.

I'm sorry to say, I kind of hate you right now. It's a jealousy thing, and I'll get over it. You can combat this however, if you are interested, by visiting this one place for me and taking a lot of pictures. It's the Basilica of San Clemente, on the Via San Giovanni, and it's a 12th century church built on a 4th century church built on a basement of two houses, one of which had been converted to a christian cult site, and the other the best preserved Mithraeum in Rome. I wouldn't mention it unless I thought you would find it awesome too.
ReplyDeleteAlso, you should get online at some point, so we can talk. Have fun!
