The Cappuchin Crypt and a few Caravaggios

For a college student in Rome, there cannot be two better words in the Italian language than ipermercato sconto or "discount superstore." Some of my classmates discovered a discount supermarket near the Colosseum known as Tuodì. I went there this morning with two of my friends and collected about one week worth of groceries for 10 Euro! We decided to walk down to the Colosseum and back because it was such a nice sunny day.

When we returned with our groceries, I went with four of my friends to visit the Cappuchin Crypt. This crypt contains the bones of 4,000 Cappuchin monks that died between 1550 and 1870. All of the skeletons are artistically arranged into different interesting patterns. In the last room, there is a sign that says, "What you are we once were, and what we are you will be" (in reference to the skulls). The experience was certainly a unique experience that made me think about the transience of life. Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures inside.

On the way back to the Piazza Navona apartments, we stopped inside the church of San Luigi dei Francesi. Only a block away from the Piazza Navona, I actually pass it on my way to studio. Inside, the building is a wonderful masterpiece of Baroque architecture. In addition, the church contains three original painting by Caravaggio (photo).
