On Friday night, I went out to dinner with some of my new UNC friends to the Saxapahaw (Sax-a-paw-hall) General Store in Saxapahaw, NC, about a 20 minute drive from Chapel Hill. I went here for the first time with my mom when she came to move me into my new apartment in August, and we both immediately fell in love with the place. Saxapahaw bills itself as "your local 5 star gas station" and it features really delicious, reasonably priced food served counter-style in, well, a gas station. There are restaurant booths in the middle of the aisles of snack foods and motor oil and beer as well as an outdoor side-porch for outdoor dining.
On Saturday, I went to a nice picnic sponsored by my graduate department in a local park about 10 minutes from campus. It was a lot of fun, but unfortunately it is still so incredibly hot here (it's been in the mid-90's all week!) that no one wanted to stand outside of the shaded pavilion for an extended period of time.
